Say goodbye to dull parquet floors
Enter into a house and no matter how nicely decked out it is, an old and tired looking parquet floor would certainly devalue one’s perception of the place. We all know how aging parquets can be a pain in the @$$. Old parquet tiles easily get dislodged from the floor and before you know it, the pieces go missing!
These parquet floors should be (ideally) professionally serviced. However, if you don’t want the hassle – or cost – of getting it professionally done, try some of our pointers below to brighten up your dull parquet floors.
Do it yourself
If your floor only needs a minor touchup, try these simple DIY steps.
• Identify the missing or damaged tiles and get replacement tiles that are of the same shade/tone. You can get them from Home Fix the DIY Store, 1 Utama, Petaling Jaya. They are available in a set of 10-20 pieces at RM6.50.
• Clean the tiles and the underfloor by wiping the tiles with a cloth and scraping off any remaining adhesive with a chisel.
• Place the tiles back after applying strong latex adhesive on the back of the tiles. You can find the adhesive at hardware stores such as Ace Hardware in Ikano Power Center, Mutiara Damansara.

Laminate it
If the damage is slightly more severe and you want your parquet floor to look new, laminate it. It is quite cost effective, only around RM6 per square feet.
You do not have to remove any tiles. Instead, just place wood flooring on top of the old flooring.
“This is a rather fuss-free method,” says Frankie Woon, managing director of Maha Asia. “But bear in mind that there may be some maintenance work (needed) to maintain the quality of the floor since it is not directly fastened to the underfloor.”
Rip and change
If the damage to the parquet floor is really bad, it is best to change all tiles.
“Although it is quite messy, it is a more comprehensive way to get a brand new floor as the new flooring will stick sturdily to the underfloor,” says Woon.
“Usually, all the tiles will be ripped off and replaced with solid wood flooring such as the merbau floor or Burmese teak floor. They make your living space look fabulous!” he claims.
